The four starting flights of the first event of the first-ever Triton ONE festival have wrapped up on South Korea’s Jeju Island and can only be described as a success. The $3,000 buy-in Triton ONE Genesis, sponsored by QQPK, drew a total of 1,185 entrants across the four flights for a prize pool of $3.2 million.

Players returned today at noon local time for Day 2, which will play to a winner. Meanwhile, yesterday’s $5,000 One Night No-Limit Hold’em 8-handed event saw Hong Kong’s Doyle Kwan Fu Lee defeating heads-up opponent Anatoly Filatov of Russia to win $67,000.

The series so far has drawn a mix of regional grinders, Triton regulars and well-known pros, including Steve O’Dwyer, Nacho Barbero, Stephen Song, Ladies Event end-boss Shiina Okamoto, Jessica Vierling and Xuan Liu, who made history earlier this year as the first female Triton champion. CelestialPoker spoke to Liu about the historic feat, which you can read about here.

Before cards went in the air on Wednesday, Sept. 3, players making their way to the tournament area were greeted by an introduction ceremony for the new series, which aims to serve as a stepping stone for players looking to compete at the highest level of tournament poker.

The ceremony, which took place outside the entrance of Landing Casino, included opening remarks from Triton Chief Operating Officer Cathy Zhao, who described the new series as a place “where rising stars come to the stage, to the spotlight, and to dream even bigger.”

“Triton ONE is more than a tournament,” said Zhao. “It is a bridge to our new champions (and for) more stories to be created.”

Five Triton figureheads, including Zhao, CEO Andy Wong and Tournament Director Luca Vivaldi, were then unveiled as digital playing cards, with Zhao being named “The Conductor,” Wong “The Architect” and Vivaldi “The Game Master” before each being handed scissors (with Triton ambassador Danny Tang filling in for an absent Wong) and cutting a ceremonial gold ribbon to kick things off in style. Players were then invited to turn themselves into custom digital playing cards by stepping up and being scanned by a high-tech screen.

Doyle Kwan Fu Lee Crowned First Champion

Doyle Kwan Fu Lee will be remembered as the first player to win a trophy at a Triton ONE stop after the Hong Kong native bested Russia’s Anatoly Filatov to win the trophy and $67,000.

Lee may share a first name with the Godfather of Poker, but he has his work cut out for him if he wants to go down in poker history. The victory not only marked Lee’s first Triton title but also his first cash.

Still, Lee’s victory was nothing short of impressive as he topped the field of 48 runners that included usual Triton suspect Justin Saliba, who most recently finished fourth in a $25,000 event at March’s Triton Poker Super High Roller Series in Jeju for $675,000.

The final table of the Nightly one-day event also included Thailand’s Nopparut Piyatass (3rd – $31,000), Malaysia’s Lim Chin Wei (4th – $23,500) and Taiwan’s Meng-Ling Lin (5th – $18,200).
